Sources claim that Sony’s response to the PlayStation 3 being hacked by ‘GeoHot’ leaving the system vulnerable to piracy is to use PC-style disc keys.
Each key is alleged to be unique to a specific game disc and they must be entered and verified for each PS3 they’re played on, with just 5 activations.
The latest firmware has apparently paved the way for this new security system on the console. Only new games of course would carry these serial keys as older titles will work as before. This has serious implications for future second-hand game sales.
Restricting the number of times you’re ‘permitted’ to use a PS3 game disc on various consoles is also likely to lead to a major backlash as the PC community is no friend to limited activation DRM. It brings up the argument ‘do you really own your games?’
There has been no confirmation from Sony as of yet.
