Fans of Hidden Path’s tower defense game, Defense Grid: The Awakening, will be pleased to find that the developer has opened up a Kickstarter project for the sequel, titled simply Defense Grid 2. The sequel is only being released on PC for the time being.
Hidden Path has an initial funding goal of $250,000 for the game, but added a chart showing players just what each of the funding tiers, up to $1M will bring.
The developers also included two special early bird funding rewards, one of which was sold out as of this writing. The $20 pledge was quickly snapped up by 500 gamers (which was basically selling the $30 pledge for $10 less), plus a $55 pledge which is the $75 pledge at a lower price as well.
If that weren’t enough, Hidden Path is collaborating with Radeon and including Radeon HD 6770 and Radeon HD 6870 cards as pledge rewards, as well as Razer-branded Wraith Red and green Naga Hex mice, too.
Defense Grid: The Awakening was released on PC, Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, and earned generally positive reviews as one of the best examples of the tower defense genre. The PC version launched in December 2008, with the XBLA and PSN versions following a few months later.
As for a console version of Defense Grid 2, Hidden Path vaguely promises, ”It might someday, but it isn’t the focus of the Kickstarter.”
