Developer Beenox Games is on its fourth Spider-Man game, after having previously worked on such titles as Spider-Man: Friend or Foe, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, and Spider-Man: Edge of Time. Each of the previous games received increasingly higher review scores - so there’s an assumption that the IP is becoming old hat for the developer.
This is not the case, as studio head Dee Brown related in an interview with Gamasutra. If anything, there’s more pressure for their next game, The Amazing Spider-Man, to be a success.
”The Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions team had some real success with their last title,” Brown related. ”And now there’s a lot of pressure on the team to make something fresh our players.”
“I think this is what you have to do. Every now and then you have to say, ‘Okay, let’s put this whole thing aside and re-think the whole approach to Spider-Man.”
He added that it ”can be a big challenge. You might be tempted to just do one Spider-Man game and just iterate on that forever on that license. But with The Amazing Spider-Man, we re-worked all the mechanics, and that was really crucial to keeping things fresh.”
The Amazing Spider-Man is due to be released on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on the 26th June, some time after the motion picture’s release. The game is set in the events that immediately follow in the movie’s.
