”We look at the original Company of Heroes, which we shipped 6 ½ years ago, with no way of supporting that product over all of those years,” Company of Heroes 2 Game Director Quinn Duffy said to Strategy Informer.
”I don’t know if we ever had a sense that players would be playing in all those numbers six and a half years later, but we had no way to continue to support development.”
Playing through a recent Company of Heroes 2 Multiplayer Beta, the back-end design hints at everything from cosmetic skins for units, to maps, even new commander trees, abilities and units can be added into the game at will, probably through DLC. When asked about this, Duffy said:
”Long term we need a game, and systems in the game, in able to help… I mean we’ll release free stuff to keep people interested, and paid-for stuff to help us support development of the game for years to come.”
”That’s design… not quite from day one, but we had a strong sense of where things were going, and we’re going to test the market and see what our audience likes and enjoys.”
When asked if this would include new factions, he said ”I’d be lying if I said we didn’t want to go there.”
Company of Heroes 2 is due out on June 25th, 2013.
