For a long time ‘no-one had invented a better interface’ than the game controller to access such a wide variety of videogames, but touchpad has spread like wildfire thanks to iOS and smart phones.
”Yes, we’re always thinking about the controller,” said COO Guillaume de Fondaumiere of Quantic Dream.
”In the past we’ve made several propositions to Sony, who is the console manufacturer, to make sure that the controller is not a barrier to the experience for certain people who are not used to this controller,” he explained.
”On one hand, if you think of it, up until now at least, no-one’s invented a better interface than a game controller”, he continued, enabling us to play ”a huge variety of styles of games.”
”On the other hand, we see today the emergence of new interfaces such as the touchpad and you’ve seen that, for instance, on the new PlayStation 4 controller there’s going to be a touchpad-type of system so that you can interact through it. That’s very interesting and we’re looking forward to designing games that are adapted to a larger audience.”
City Interactive’s Thomasz Gop, formerly of CD Projekt RED, believes the touchpad section of the new DualShock will likely serve as an extra way to interact with the user interface, at first at least. ”I don’t think it’s a breakthrough feature, not to disrespect it - it’s still very cool,” added Gop.
So far only the newly designed DualShock controller for the PlayStation 4 has been revealed, not the console itself.
