Dwarf Fortress received its first update in two years yesterday. Update 0.40.01 adds a variety of different features and fixes, including the ability to retire/unretire your fortresses.
”Losing is still fun but if it doesn’t happen when you want, you can put it off for a while,” says the game’s creator Tarn Adams.
If you’re not familiar with the text-only roguelike then most of the notes for this new update won’t make a lick of sense, but for those who’ve been messing around with the emergent possibilities of the game for the last two years it will be a nice surprise.
There’s plenty of new features, including ”new emotions” for your dwarf inhabitants, ”megabeasts” that can lay waste to your realm and reworked animal populations.
One nice new feature is that ‘visualiser’ mods like Stonesense, which converts your fortress into a classic isometric perspective, rather than the bundle of text and code that the regular game shows, are now supported.
This handy Starter Pack bundles everything you need to get your Dwarf Fortress up and running, including Stonesense.
