BitMonster, Inc’s GRAV is a sandbox online sci-fi adventure in which you team up with a group of other players in shiny armour, and head out to murder the local aliens and loot all their stuff.
Sounds a bit like a certain high-profile Bungie game, right? That’s clearly the inspiration for the game, which will launch on Steam Early Access later this year.
There are differences of course. GRAV favours a third-person camera view, and features a focus on crafting rather than following tiny Dinklage robots about. It also probably cost around a millionth of what Destiny did, and comes from a team best known for light-hearted adventure RPG Lili: Child of Geo.
Still, GRAV looks like it could provide a fun, colourful B-movie alternative, and manages to pack in those interesting crafting elements and some other intriguing ideas. Procedurally-generated worlds will feature an array of different alien species and wildlife, and dynamic events will pop up, from “blossoming night flowers, meteors raining down from the heavens, or even a horde of very angry alien wildlife trying to kill you and anything you have ever made.”
In fact (whisper it) it sound like there’s more invention on display here than in Bungie’s game. There’s also a LOT of dancing. Seriously, check the trailer. We’ll see if all those ambitious promises can actually hold together when the game launches before the end of the year.
