Resident Evil: Revelations 2 producer Michiteru Okabe is a big fan of VR technology, and think that it makes ”perfect sense” for the Resident Evil series and horror games in general.
”I’m really excited about VR,” said Okabe, speaking to Game Informer, ”I think it makes sense. Having gone from 2D to 3D, now it’s time to surround yourself in these worlds instead of just having a screen in front of you.
Having players fully immersed in a game-world would be an incredibly powerful tool for horror game directors. As long as they don’t give their players a genuine heart attack, which is what I think would happen if I played VR Alien: Isolation.
Also interviewed was Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, producer of the upcoming Resident Evil HD remake. He revealed that Capcom has already built a prototype VR version of the iconic Resident Evil mansion, and said that if the studio was to remake the original again (for about the 160th time), ”then we need to make that in virtual reality.”
It’s interesting; I keep thinking, would VR horror just be too much for a mainstream audience? I don’t know if even hardcore fans could keep playing at that level of stress.
