Square Enix’s slightly confusing approach to releasing Final Fantasy games over Steam continues (FFVII, FFVIII…FFIII?), with Final Fantasy III the latest classic title to make it onto Valve’s online retail service.
Available tomorrow, May 28, the updated version is “optimised for PC gaming with new and improved 3D visuals and story sequences”. Square have also added in Steam Trading Card support and new visuals for the game’s Job system.
Basically it’s a slightly George Lucas-ed version of the DS edition of FFIII launched back in 2008, rather than the original 2D Nintendo version. Tough luck if you’d prefer the retro version, but at least the basic story and gameplay remain largely intact.
It’s presumably not the last we’ll see of the RPG series on Steam. Producer Yoshinori Kitase revealed recently in an interview with Eurogamer that he’d like to see more of the series’ back catalogue come to online retail services.
”We see potential in it (PC versions) and there are lots of regions and countries where PC is very strong,” he told the website, ”So in terms of our hope of being able to deliver our games to every single country in the world and to as many gamers as possible, yes, we would definitely be interested in pursuing that route in the future.”
