Publisher Paradox Interactive has announced Knights of Pen and Paper 2, a follow-up to the popular 2013 game-within-a-game developed by Kyy Games.
The set-up is thus; not only are you playing as a group of heroes exploring a fantasy world, you’re also playing as the players who are playing those heroes in a tabletop RPG. Clear?
It’s basically a love letter to the communal spirit of tabletop gaming, all wrapped up in some lovely 16-bit graphics, with a full class system and crafting chucked in for good measure. Lovely stuff.
”Select among mighty classes like Wizard, Thief or Warrior; proud races like Dwarf or Elf; and snark-slinging players like Goth, Lab Rat or Rocker,” explains Paradox. ”Choose quests and combat encounters, delve dungeons, craft powerful items and watch in horror as your muscle-packed barbarian rolls a one on his body check. Together, face the greatest threat the campaign world has ever faced: The new rules edition.”
Despite adoring the concept, I never really got into the first game. Let’s hope the sequel can take that excellent core idea and really run with it. It’s set for release on May 14 this year.
(PS: Excellent trailer, right? Fine use of a pixel horse.)
