Watching huge, lumbering spaceships knock the absolute crap out of each other is one of life’s great pleasures. Developer Yager is well aware of this, which is why they’ve created a whole game out of that very concept - the very promising Dreadnought.
If you’re wondering how its giant naval battles work, you can check out a ten-minute slice of gameplay footage from last month’s PAX South, complete with developer commentary.
Look pretty tasty, though to be brutally honest I’d prefer to be staging those battles in space, rather than hovering a few hundred feet above ground. From the look of it the only time you spend in space is in the pre-mission briefing, which lets you plan out your attack with your squadron.
As for the real stars of the show, the ships themselves, there’s a few different classes on display here. Light Destroyers are fast, heavy-hitting assault ships that do a lot of damage but are vulnerable to return fire, while Tactical Cruisers act as a support class, even packing their own ‘heal beam’ to repair damaged allies. Dreadnoughts are massive damage sponges that can take a battering and return it in kind. Artillery Cruisers basically act like snipers, packing long-range railgun beams that do nasty damage to vulnerable vessels.
Looks like Yager’s packing in lots of variety and a bunch of different ways to play. No word on when we might get our grubby mitts on Dreadnought yet, but you can register for a forthcoming beta on the game’s website.
