To the excitement of tech nerds everywhere, Oculus VR has finally revealed its planned release schedule for the consumer version of the Oculus Rift headset - prepare for virtual reality madness to begin in earnest in the first quarter of 2016.
Oculus also revealed that pre-orders for the highly anticipated gadget will open ”later this year”, though we don’t have a specific date just yet.
The company will start revealing the precise technical wizardry behind the headset next week, though we do know the retail version will be based on the Crescent Bay prototype hardware shipped out to developers late last year. The consumer model will include an improved tracking system that works when both seated and standing, and a number of other improvements on previous models.
Oculus will also start revealing the headset’s accompanying software and initial supported games pretty soon. Our brave pioneer Chris Capel tested out a few examples of games designed with VR in mind at EGX Rezzed earlier this year, and despite a touch of motion sickness, I think it’s fair to say he was pretty impressed with the tech.
Let’s all join hands and pray the thing isn’t too expensive. The current development kit costs $350.00, but it’s unclear whether that price will go down for the consumer model.
