Formed way back in 1994, Zombie Studios has worked on over thirty titles, including Zork Nemesis, Blacklight: Retribution and Daylight. In today’s climate that’s would be an impressive run for any studio.
Unfortunately the developer today announced that it’s closing its doors. The current owners are retiring from the industry, though several past employees will form a new studio called Builder Box in the aftermath of the closure.
“The owners of Zombie Studios are retiring and wish to thank you, our fans, for years of support you have provided us,” reads the statement posted on Zombie’s website. “It has been awesome working with all the various technology over the years, both hardware and software, growing with the industry and out fans, and producing fun games and technology of our own.”
Fans of free-to-play near-future shooter Blacklight: Retribution, probably the company’s best known recent hit, will be happy to hear that the title won’t be going the way of the dodo. New studio Builder Box will continue development on the game, and new co-CEO duo Andy Kipling and Russell Nelson promise that the community won’t be negatively affected by the transition.
“While ownership of the game has changed, the people behind the scenes who have been constantly contributing to the Blacklight universe for the last four years remains intact,” they write in a Facebook post. “Builder Box will be working with Perfect World so that, as a fan, you can look forward to more updates and exciting changes in the coming year.”
