As we all know, 1996 action film The Rock is the peak of human creation. Mostly because it contains both Nicholas Cage and Sean Connery, but also slightly because Alcatraz Prison is the best setting ever.
Now sci-fi MMO Defiance is trying to get in on the act, with the game’s major new Alcatraz update relocating the alien shooting and looting to the infamous island just off the coast of San Francisco.
Defiance is of course connected with the TV show of the same name, which is just about to kick off a third season. The Ark Hunters, basically salvagers hunting for alien tech, are relocating westwards, looking for new shelter. What better place to hide out than a battered-down old island that’s been home to only expensive audio tours for the last few hundred years?
”The Rock, a now prison-turned-island-base and symbol of authority, has become a hub for daring Expeditions and raids against threats all across the New Frontier and beyond,” explains Trion Worlds, ”and it’s up to players to battle deep into this new staging territory against Votan and humans alike.”
In gameplay terms you’ll find all-new Expeditions feature, which sets you up against a ”gauntlet of co-op matches” against increasingly tough enemies, Cyber Rig systems that let you augment your character’s skills, and Cyber Chips for modifying your weapons. The latter drop from new Expedition bosses. There’s a few other bits and pieces in there too, which you can read about over on the game’s website.
The Alcatraz content update drops on June 12, just ahead of the TV show’s season three premiere.
