MechWarrior Online recently officially launched on Steam after a few years on the market. The game features a ton of strategy, from the in-game presence of a mix of mechs to the out-of-game purchase, customization, and upkeep of owned mechs. Now it would appear top players are going to get to showcase their skills. Piranha has announced a world tournament with a hefty prize pot.
The tournament was announced in a video via the MechWarrior Online Youtube channel. Teams from all over the world will compete in regional qualifiers and championships for a chance to be flown to a to-be-determined location for the World Championship, where they will battle for glory, pride, and a hefty $100,000 prize pot.
MechWarrior Online has come a long way through a lengthy beta period and launch as a free-to-play game on its own official website and has finally come to Steam, offering its unique team-based first-person mech warfare experience to a grander audience of players. I played it some time ago during its beta period and even years ago, I felt it had all the fixings to be a strong esports title. With the amount of mechs, weaponry, upgrades, and variables that can be used to customize a player’s playstyle in the game, there’s bound to be an enormous variety of team builds and strategies on all levels of the tournament.
The beginning stages of the MechWarrior Online World Championship will take place in the early months of 2016.
