Relic’s released another developer diary video for Company of Heroes 2: The British Forces, this time explaining the rationale behind the way the Tommies play.
“We looked at the context of British history in World War 2,” says lead game designer Quinn Duffy, “we looked at their tactical doctrines, and the things they were very, very good at as an army. We looked at historical accounts of them being very effective on the defence. Once they grabbed a piece of ground, it was very rare for them to be pushed off of it.”
Hence the ‘Anvil’ part of the new army’s ‘Hammer and Anvil’ philosophy. British armies, Duffy explains, can really push two ways; they can either focus on being a defensive bulwark, or concentrate on devolving their fast cruiser tanks and elite infantry for a more aggressive style.
British Commanders, meanwhile, have abilities that are described as “set-piece combat”. They’ll be able to call in hugely damaging artillery strikes, or sneaky glider landings, but they won’t be able to pump out as many special abilities as the other armies.
The British Forces expansion will be available on September 3. Check out our recent interview with Relic for more.
