Bioshock came out a long time ago, 2007 to be precise. 8 years have passed and technology has advanced dramatically. So despite being a beautiful game for the most part, its limitations can easily be seen with even the untrained eye. One of those limitations was the 30 frame per second limiter put on the game’s graphics engine. Well, now there’s a mod for that.
Steam community modder Turtle [CPU Cool] created a fantastic new mod that he recently shared with the Irrational Games fans of the world. Not only does it remove the 30FPS limiter on the game’s graphics engine, but it allows you to push the game to 60, 120, and even an amazing 144 FPS. You have to see the results and comparison in the video below. Be sure to set your video settings to 60FPS to see them clearly.
Amazing to say the least. Set next to this mod, the vanilla 2007 edition of the game looks ridiculously choppy in comparison. With the Bioshock Physics Unlocker, the game has visuals that could stand up to a lot of well-done modern games today. The directions are pretty straight forward. You download it from GitHub, extract the patcher to your Bioshock directory, run the patcher, and type in the FPS you want. Most folks can probably just do 60 FPS, but those with prolific machines can practically make the game run as smooth as water running over glass.
It’s certainly a gift for the community and perhaps even a good reason for PC players to go back and revisit the game that would make Irrational Games and Ken Levine a household name. While you download it, check out the hints of what Irrational and Levine might have up their sleeve next.
