Orgrim Doomhammer is just one of the subtly named orcs who’ll be making their cinematic debut in Duncan Jones’ film adaptation of World of Warcraft next year, and the first pictures of this key character in the fantasy mythos have been posted online.
It’s actually pretty surprising how close the film’s orcs are to their video game cohorts – both favour strong jawlines with pointy tusks, bulging muscles, and a permanent expression of grumpiness/maniacal rage.
Of course, unlike other fantasy epics, orcs aren’t simply the bad guys here. In Warcraft’s universe they’re as honorable, stubborn and ultimately persecuted as their human foes. Ogrim himself is a key player in the initial skirmishes between the two opposing races, and without wishing to spoil anything, plays a pretty important role in the eventual division within the orcish hordes.
He’s played by British actor Robert Kazinsky, of whom Jones had the following to say when the initial casting was announced; “We were looking for someone who would be able to perform the gruffness, the humor, and the toughness of this character.”
I still find it pretty hard to believe this is finally happening. I’m no Warcraft expert, but I’m a huge fan of Duncan Jones, and I’m hoping he’ll be able to deliver the first truly good video game movie when Warcraft hits cinemas in June 2016.
