Danish indie developer Logic Artists’ turn-based strategy adventure Expeditions: Conquistador was a fine little game, so I’m happy to hear the team is returning to their historical series - this time, however, they’re swapping Spanish galleons for viking longboats.
Expeditions: Viking will feature the same blend of strategic combat, RPG development, and choose-your-own-adventure storytelling as its predecessor, but it’ll also add some interesting new features.
”Expeditions: Viking is a tactical RPG where players inherit the leadership of their clan,” the team explains. ”Charged with elevating their clan’s status, players must seek adventure in far-away lands and defending their home from their enemies, both foreign and domestic.”
That means you’re not simply running around stealing as much gold as you can from the natives this time; you’ve got the people back home to worry about, too. You’ll be in charge of an upgradable player village, a hub you’ll return to between raiding missions, which will need to be defended from rival clans. Rather than the original’s separate world map, combat and exploration will now take place in the same layer, ”transitioning from unrestricted, exploratory movement to turn-based combat smoothly”, while your custom characters will be represented by a unique model rather than the generic character from the first game.
“We are very excited to return to our roots in the RPG genre, and as developers from the Nordic region, to make a game in a setting that is a lot closer to home than anything we’ve done before”, said Jonas Wæver, creative director for Logic Artists .“We’re improving on the Conquistador formula with deeper and more dynamic systems for character progression, combat abilities, role-playing, choice and consequence, and expanding on our favorite part of Conquistador: camping and wilderness survival”
All sounds pretty good to me. Conquistador was slightly rough, but packed with charm. I’m excited to see how the team iterates on their good ideas for the sequel. There’s no word on when Expeditions: Viking will drop just yet. In the meantime, you can keep an eye on the series’ Facebook page for further info.
