The major Age of Charlemagne expansion for Total War: Attila has been out for the past two weeks, but Creative Assembly has released a new developer diary that gives a history lesson on the legendary Holy Roman emperor who was considered simultaneously a crusader, lawmaker, teacher, and a genocidal despot.
The video is narrated by historian and archaeologist Dr. Paul Harrison, who runs down the highlights of Charlemagne’s life, starting from his status as a warrior in 742 to his rise to power as King of the Franks in 768. It covers his allegiance with Pope Hadrian, his conquests throughout Europe, his heinous act of the Massacre of Verden, and being crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III to cement the divide between the West and the Byzantine Empire. The story ends with his death at 72 as a legendary ruler.
The expansion itself, for those who have not checked it out, includes a brand new campaign map, starting in Europe in 768 when Charlemagne ruled the Franks, as mentioned earlier. Players will enjoy 8 playable factions, 50 provinces to conquer, and such period units as Knights, Paladins and Housecarls.
The expansion runs $14.99 and can be downloaded from Steam here.
