Baldur’s Gate fans are in for a treat as Overhaul Games is ploughing ahead with their own adventure in the iconic series, and it will be bridging between the original two games. It’s an expansion to Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition.
This is the first time Beamdog and their studio Overhaul will be creating something new. Game designer and writer Chris Avellone admits he’s ”actually pretty jealous” about parts of it.
”When I heard they were gonna do a brand new one, I just got excited about it, like, ‘There’s gonna be a new story in Baldur’s Gate? Alright, I’m there’,” Avellone said in an interview. “I got a chance to see it before everyone else - that appealed to my selfish nature.” That selfish playthrough was around 25 to 30 hours playing an unfinished version of the new campaign.
”That was the first thing that surprised me - it’s actually bigger than either of the other Baldur’s Gate expansions,” he said. “I think it’s actually bigger than both of those expansions combined.”
Amber Scott and Andrew Foley were writers for Baldur’s Gate: Siege of Dragonspear, and hail from the land of D&D and comics - a narratively lethal combo. Avellone gave his thoughts.
“I told them all the parts that I thought were really, really strong,” he said. “And there are a lot of points that I was actually pretty jealous about.”
“Both of them did a really good job of matching the tones of the original Baldur’s Gate characters. And they also did a great job of introducing new characters who I also liked a lot.”
”My party got their asses kicked quite a few times,” he added.
Baldur’s Gate: Siege of Dragonspear releases on PC later this year.
