The folks behind Quake Live have proudly announced that they’re utilizing a ton of options on Steam in support of their online shooter. Among the many options that will be available on Steamworks, Quake Live is LAN, dedicated servers, and the Workshop, allowing modders to get in on the fun.
There are potential issues however. Players are reporting their friend’s lists and clans removed after the change over to the new Quake Live. The old launcher has been retired so it’s possible not everything made it over in transition. In addition, subscription services have also been retired in favor of setting a base cost ($9.99) with the idea of allowing all players the same content and participation in equal order going forward.
Modders have introduced a ton of good content to the Quake’s universe in the past. As they make the transition to working through Steam, hopefully the game will open itself to a whole new realm of creative minds ready to offer their own interesting ideas to the game without alienating the faithful fan base it has accrued over the years. The initial reactions are coming in less thrilled about the change than the dev team might have wanted though.
