Compulsion Games’ odd, creepy little survival game We Happy Few has been fully funded on Kickstarter, with four days left to go on the campaign. Currently it’s sitting pretty on $265,724 CAD, from a $250,000 goal.
Which means, as the team at Compulsion subtly reminds us, that there’s still time to get a few more stretch goals locked in. Additional, craftable drugs have already been unlocked, and the next stage, at $280K, will add a free-form sandbox mode.
We Happy Few takes place in a surreal, The Prisoner-esque English town ruled over by the creepy yet avuncular Uncle Jack. The populace is kept under control by a mix of propaganda and psychotropic drugs, but when you stop taking your daily dose you realise it’s probably time to make a hasty retreat. Mechanically, the game’s a mix of survival and roguelike elements, which the extra complication that if you behave too irrationally, the town’s drug-addled civilians will reveal you as a ‘naughty Downer’, at which point they’ll attempt to violently force-feed you your prescription of drugs.
”You guys made all the difference in getting us to the finish line - as you will see below! As a maturing independent studio, we don’t have the same kind of public reach as big developers, but we felt that - if we presented a strong game to the community - and worked hard at spreading the word, then people would come,” writes the team.
And they certainly did. Compulsion Games is currently working on an pre-Alpha build to hand out to backers. You can check out fifteen minutes of gameplay from the same build in the video above.
