While it was Firaxis’ wonderful XCOM reboot that took all the headlines, developer Goldhawk Interactive’s more authentic homage to the original games, Xenonauts, was a strong game in its own right.
Good news for fans of this tougher, more open-ended approach to the alien invasion concept then - Goldhawk has posted on its forum, revealing that the team is seriously considering a sequel.
”In short - we’re still evaluating the possibility,” the team writes, ”but I’d say the chances of us making Xenonauts 2 as our next game are better than even. The response to and feedback given on a potential sequel by the community has been remarkable and has gone a long way to convincing us that it would be a good idea.”
What follows is a fairly in-depth run-through of the team’s current ideas for a second game. The major challenge would be a planned switch to a 3D engine, while maintaining the same sprite art style as the original game. Air combat would also be introduced, along with improvements to the strategy layer. The full post makes an interesting read.
”So that’s basically where we’re at,” sums up Goldhawk. ”Xenonauts 2 is looking more likely than not and we’re actively designing and prototyping it at the moment, but it’ll probably take a month or two until we’re ready to make a final decision.”
