Oh, boy, 22cans, I wanna pull for you. I wanna believe that you’re trying to make a cool, weird game with Godus. But you just keep making it so hard for me.
Yesterday, the game got a free RTSish update called Godus Wars as a seeming attempt to build goodwill with a playerbase that was quite upset with the team’s lack of communication and feature updates. The new combat-based mode challenged players with filling a deity’s shoes and conquering their foes continent by continent.
The catch? The second continent costs $4.99. That’s on top of the $14.99 for the game itself, which is currently in Early Access.
It’s needless to say, but I’m going to say it anyway: This upset some people. 22cans quickly made the add-on free, but it seems the damage has been done. Simon Phillips, CEO of the company, said ”Whilst we think that it does represent good value, especially considering that Godus Wars has been delivered as a free update to hundreds of thousands of users and the lower purchase price of the main game we understand previous Godus owners frustrations with this,” adding, “Therefore, based on your feedback, the extra content will be available to all free-of-charge.
That reads to me as more of a “sorry you got mad” than a ”sorry we messed up,” and it’s tough to imagine anybody giving Godus a second (third? (fourth?)) chance.
I’ll miss you, Mr. Molyneux. The dog was a good idea.
