Ron Gilbert is making a new adventure game. Ron Gilbert is making a new adventure game! If that doesn’t get you excited then maybe this shiny new trailer will.
Thimbleweed Park is the oldest school of old-school adventure games, and looks pixel-for-pixel like a brand new game built in the classic SCUMM engine. (I doubt it’ll run in ScummVM, though.) Ron Gilbert, if you don’t recall (you poor, sad, soul), was the mind behind the original Maniac Mansion and had a heavy role in the first two Monkey Islands. More recently, he put out the action-RPG DeathSpank, but we prefer not to talk about that.
What’s Thimbleweed Park about? Well, it’s ”the curious story of two washed up detectives investigating a dead body found in the river just outside of town. It’s a game where you switch between five playable characters while uncovering the dark, satirical and bizarre world of Thimbleweed Park.”
The trailer below has X-Files, Twilight Zone, Twin Peaks and any other number of supernatural mystery vibes about it along with a hefty helping of goofy characters and ultra-dry wit. It’s due to hit PC, Mac, and Linux later this year.
