Now we’re at a trilogy of back-to-back sci-fi 4X stories, with Endless Space 2 showing off two new factions ahead of its Early Access launch later this summer. They’ve also announced a contest for players to make their own faction, and given the genre’s sudden prolificness I wouldn’t be surprised to see a contest to make an entire game soon.
The first new trailer shows off the Sophons, who were appropriately the first to research a great deal of the galaxy’s technology, and the first to put it to some destructive ends. The warlike, hungering Cravers, on the other hand, don’t wrap up their slaughter in any high-minded ideals about pursuing science.

In addition, a Faction Creation Contest has just begun, allowing fans the chance to get a design in as one of the eight major factions in the final game. The contest will have three phases, with fans conceptualizing a race through its games mechanics, visual design, and narrative elements.
Endless Space 2 will hit Early Access this summer, featuring a selection of the factions and features that will be available in the final game. We’ll see if the sequel holds up to the original, or the increasingly large number of competitors in the genre.
