Beating Oculus to the punch yet again, there's a new peripheral on the way for Valve and HTC's 'Vive' VR headset that turns the impressive piece of kit into a completely wireless affair without any noticeable lag.
Made by TPCAST - which is one of the 33 companies enrolled into the Vive X Accelerator program - the group previewed the add-on in Shenzhen, China, yesterday. Different to the wireless prototype in the works over at Quark VR, this much-wanted idea ships in Q1 2017.
From the looks of things, the TPCAST addon is simply a receiver module you'll attach to the top of the Vive's existing headband with a small battery pouch attached to the rear side. Presumably there's a sender unit around the PC somewhere, but the point is that the there will be zero wires connecting the Vive to the PC.
Though the small battery can only juice up the receiver for around 90 minutes, TPCAST already have a larger battery in the works that will simply sit in your pocket.
Pre-orders go live on the Vive's Chinese website at 7am Pacific - today. Priced at around $220, the kit isn't cheap. But HTC expects "avid" users will buy into it. And so long as you're willing to pay the shipping fee, they'll send it just about anywhere.
Be prepared to provide your Vive serial number, however, as the unit is a limited release with priority placed on those already in possession of a Vive headset.
