It’s been awhile since we heard from former Sony Online Entertainment and Daybreak Games president John Smedley. However, the former executive has appeared in the industry again today along with his new company, Pixelmage Games. Smedley and his team are looking to fund a new game which appeared on Kickstarter today.
Hero’s Song is meant to be an open-world 2D pixel art RPG in which players are meant to shape the world around them by their actions. Given Smedley’s hefty involvement in open world environments in the past (Everquest, Planetside, H1Z1, etc.), it might be safe to say a project like this is in good hands under his direction.
Smedley came off of quite a rough period in 2015. He stepped down from his position at Daybreak following a series of targeted DDoS for his promises to carry out legal action against a hacker. Hero’s Song appears to be a return to form for Smedley and he has promised that even if the game doesn’t get 100% funded, it will still get made one way or another.
Pixelmage Games is asking for $800,000 to fully fund Hero’s Song.
