As promised a month ago, Jagex has announced that the open beta for Chronicle: RuneScape Legends is now live. Anyone can visit the official game site and start playing the online collectible card game.
Chronicle: Runescape Legends, as the title implies, is based on the long-running MMO Runescape. ”Chronicle twists traditional strategy card game mechanics from battle and board control to create a unique experience, that embraces RPG-style questing and skilling,” promises the publisher.
The game is actually a mix of PvP and PvE as players actually create their own adventure by strategically selecting Support and Enemy cards from their deck. forming a quest for their chosen Legend. The quest progresses as if they had created their own roleplaying game storyline, in parallel with their opponent’s quests. Naturally, cards will be played to also trip up their rival, as well as building up their own force.
According to the game’s senior producer, Mark Killey, “Chronicle is a game of grand strategy and one where your own cards can not only be your greatest ally but also your deadliest enemy. Chronicle is all about survival of the smartest and it’s the PvP-meets-PvE questing that gives Chronicle a competitive core, making a fun mechanic into a truly compelling evolution of the genre.”
Aside from the basic gameplay seen during the closed beta, the open beta will add Dungeoneering, Skilling, Customisation, and Leaderboards. Dungeoneering is a new mode where players creatie a drafted deck and combat a gauntlet of increasingly difficult PvP challenges. Skilling allows players to unlock customisation options through earning XP, which will allow players to dress up their Legend in their own unique style. The new Leaderboards will highlight the best players of the ranked Bronze, Silver and Gold leagues.
The open beta will also include new content in the form of two new Legends, Vanescula the Vampyre and Morvran the greatest Slayer Master. Both come with their own themed cards. It’ll also add some new environments, including The Wilderness Crater and Barrows, ”adding some fire and brimstone to your adventures.”
