The virtual reality race continues to escalate, as Starbreeze - best known for producing Payday 2 and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons - has announced that it will be opening a new virtual reality arcade in Los Angeles. The venue has been dubbed “Project Starcade”, aimed at making ”premium VR experiences accessible for the masses.”
The StarCade Project will be featuring Starbreeze’s own StarVR headset. ”We’ve managed to secure a prime location where people are welcome to step into our StarCade and enjoy our Overkill’s The Walking Dead VR experience.” stated CTO Emmanuel Marquez.
Skybound Entertainment, which publishes Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead graphic novels, reacted enthusiastically to the news. According to the publisher’s president, Daniel Murray, “When we heard about the StarCade initiative we were immediately excited. It allows us to further explore The Walking Dead universe in a completely new way.”
Oddly, the press release did not mention Starbreeze’s VR-specific game being developed for Lionsgate, John Wick: The Impossible Task, which would seem like a natural fit for the studio’s arcade plans.
The Star VR boasts a 210° field of view, with a dual 5.5” Quad HD panel and position tracking. The VR headset also includes Fresnel lenses, which uses ring-shaped segments to allow for short focal length while remaining lightweight
