The last major videogame to bear the name TRON was released way back in November 2010 with TRON: Evolution. Now, a new officially licensed game in the series, TRON RUN/r, will be leaving Steam Early Access and launching on the 16th February 2016.
TRON RUN/r is a small scale title, basically a cross between Bit Runner and Sonic 3D, in which the player tries to run a cyberspace race track as fast as possible, avoiding obstacles as they go. The race will involve sprinting, wall-running, temporarily turning into a light cycle, and even gliding on wings.
The full release of TRON RUN/r will add more content than it had during its initial Early Access launch. It will include more than 30 levels and an additional gameplay mode. In addition to the original “Disc” and “Cycle” modes, the full release will add the “Stream” mode, where players must race through a series of remixed versions of the basic levels. Players will also be able to customize their avatars with alternate suits, helmets and even light cycles.
The game will also feature score by noted composers Giorgio Moroder and Raney Shockne; Moroder is very appropriate for a game that references the 1982 science fiction film, since much of his music defined the 1980’s, with synth pop tunes that appeared in Electric Dreams and Midnight Express. The game also includes remixes by Autechre, Bibio, Darkstar, Joywave, patten, and Plaid.
The game can be bought on Steam Early Access now for $9.99. When the game launches, the price will rise to $19.99.
