Everyone's favorite space-based spreadsheet simulator - EVE: Online - is going free-to-play in just a few weeks time. And what better time to release a more up-to-date trailer for the droves of wannabe space merchants looking to see just how those record-breaking PvP battles break out.
Though many would likely say it doesn't exactly showcase the eventual player experience, or the kind of stuff we saw in the 'This is EVE' trailer, we're sure it does a decent enough job of building the hype train needed to keep a move like this fresh in people's minds.
While difficult to explain in practice, EVE Online - while never considered hugely successful - had little trouble retaining a group of loyal space denizens. Its complicated mix of expensive, destructible ships and deep ecosystem made for a game begging for players to warp in, risk losing everything, and potentially walk away with a new life for themselves while systematically destroying the lives of those on the receiving end of defeat.
It's never quite as action-packed as it sounds, but the risk of what you could lose in a surprise dogfight seems to be what spurs players on. Akin to a good rogue-like or childhood spent luring friends into the Runescape wilderness and playing Stand & Deliver by Adam & The Ants as you chase them deeper with your rune arrows and DD++.
You'll have to wait until November 15 to get the free-to-play experience. Or, give it a day and use the current 14-day trial to carry you all the way to the relaunch.
