Smashing the expectations of only the developers at this point, Sunless Skies reached its Kickstarter goal in just under 4 hours.
In the past week, we've seen 3 big indie titles adopt some form of community funding to see their project through the finish line, and each time the community has responded at an alarming rate.
With Banner Saga 3 reaching its $200,000 goal in just under a week to Pillar of Eternity 2 managing $1.1 Million in a day, Failbetter games likely didn't expect to the the next on that list; especially not expecting to be the one to reach its goal in a shorter amount of time. Looking for only $100,000, the sequel to Sunless Sea reached their goal in a mere 4 hours.
Sunless Sea's Expansion Will Take You To The Bottom Of The Ocean
And this wasn't without the group's Twitter account sobbing the whole way. Tweeting its progress along that 4 hour stretch, they reached the 25% mark in 20 minutes with pledges throwing them around $1,000 per minute around that time. Shortly after, everyone involved on either side started to draw the game's Correspondence symbols on their skin like cultists to unlock more Kickstarter rewards. Halfway funded in the same hour, the team ended their workday to "go[ing] home to press F5 and sweat profusely" only to come back fully funded one hour later.
It's a sign of how, despite many Kickstarter projects going south, the right attitude (and the right game) will have people eager to help make it happen. Now we wait for their new work day and potential stretch goals. Good luck, everyone. The full game is expected to release May 2018.
