After just two weeks on sale, Resident Evil 7 has managed to shift 3 million copies worldwide.
The news comes from a spontaneous press release from Capcom claiming that, through the launch of its newest entry, the Resident Evil franchise has now sold through 76 million units worldwide.
For anyone keeping track, the series has - as of today - sold 1 million more copies than Grand Theft Auto V has sold in 3 years. There's something to be said about the broad appeal of a specific genre, there. As expected with a primarily single-player adventure title, the vast majority of its sales will likely take place over its first few months on sale with Capcom saying the seventh major entry had shipped 2.5 million copies last month alone.
What Did We Make Of Capcom's Return To Form? It's Almost Perfect
Gleefully selling through its initial shipment, digital sales through Steam are reported to have topped 300,000 units - noticeably less than their console counter-parts. It's worth noting that the limited appeal of a horror game could be acting as a self-imposed blockade on the over-all reach of the title; and with the growing culture of simply watching someone else be scared by spooky games on YouTube, we can imagine that comes into effect one way or another.
Regardless, it's a solid start for Capcom's rejuvenation of the series. Maybe things will pick up further one price cuts start to take effect - which usually doesn't take long for single-payer games. Though on-going DLC may stretch out its lifespan a little longer. Want to bolster its numbers? Pick it up on Steam.
