With Rocket League's 'Dropshot' update planned for March 22, the date will mark the end of the current competitive Season 3 and, instantly, mark the beginning of Competitive Season 4. But how different is it going to feel?
Well, for starters, those who ranked in each individual tier of the closing season will begin receiving their allotted prizes - but the biggest thing to come of the new season is an all-new ranking system.
Due to the rising skill in the game's current playerbase after a couple of years out on the field, Psyonix has noted that those don the vaguely altered set of 'Challenger' rank medals are, more often than not, on a completely different skill level to those on the lower end of the Challenger spectrum. So, so facilitate a need for more transparency in player skill levels, the ranking tiers will see the biggest change.
Prepare To Throw Down In New Ways With Rocket League's New 'Dropshot' Match
Now split into Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamon and and Champion with four divisions within each ranking's three tiers, it should become more clear when you're up against a team that falls more in-line with your current skill level. Likewise, to match with the new system, the rewards per tier will be altered, too.
Furthermore, those sitting within Champion tiers will start to see low-end Grand Champion players on their playing field more often and Season 4 should last around 4 months. In an attempt to avoid the apparent Season 3 placement frenzy, there's a soft reset this time around. Essentially meaning you'll still have to run your placement matches, the system will already know of your previous ranking and work from that a little more closely so high-grade players aren't bulldozing through the newbies for days on end.
There's a few notable alterations in the MMR department, too, that should make for more consistently fair games with an equal gain/loss ratio. And don't go expecting Neo Tokyo and Arena to pop up in your ranked matches, either. They've been shifted out for the foreseeable future.
We're not quite there yet, but there's only a few days left for Season 3 to pave the way for Season 4. If you're ranked currently, sustain it before it's too late. And if you thought the current season was a little too uneven, perhaps the next will win you over.
