ARK: Survival Evolved. It has everything you could ever want: Dinosaurs, trees to punch, poop and, of course, grappling hooks. Added early last year for Early Access players, those PC and console players who've just now jumped into the green hills of ARK should know how to use one of the most versatile pieces of equipment you'll come across.
Just like a James Bond movie or something you'd see Bruce Wayne whip out mid-fight, the grappling hook can be used as both an offensive and defensive tool to suit the occasion on hand. Being relatively easy to craft in bulk, there's no reason to go without the four-pronged projectile. It can get you out of some pretty shifty situations.Or just to drag your dead friend around!
To craft them, you'll need to have learned the pattern - obviously. Then, you'll be expected to have the following items;
- 3x Stone Arrow
- 1x Cementing Paste
- 9x Metal Ingot
- 2x Thatch
- 35x Fibre
With all that in hand, it's time to craft. Take the goods to the Smithy and go to town. They craft very quickly, so you won't have to find something to do in the meantime. Just make them and go. From there, you'll load these beauties into a crossbow to fire. And they'll stick onto just about anything, really. Fire at the top-end of a building or structure, watch it hook, and tap the space bar to quickly reel yourself in. Tap it again and you'll launch upward, usually enough to land atop are relatively small building or base.
ARK: Survival Evolved Leaves Early Access With An Elaborate Limited Edition Bundle
Due to its multi-stage execution, however, the grappling hook can be used for some strategic maneuvering, After hooking a surface, the grappling hook will stay in effect even when switched out to another weapon. You can't reel yourself in without switching back, but it means you can plan your escape before engaging nearby enemies - or use the rapid movement to surprise and confuse your foe mid-brawl to quickly turn the tables.
YouTuber 'GamesGlitches Gaming (quite a mouthful) made a video on such a topic back when the grappling hook first arrived to ARK: Survival Evolved. It's a little long-winded, but there's plenty of neat ideas to use here - like grappling onto a player's pterodactyl and raining hell from the skies.
