With the rise of any video game comes the inevitable flood of false websites that promote free in-game items or in-game currency. With the worldwide infection of Epic Games’ Fortnite, there has been a wave of websites and social media pages that offer free V-Bucks, which are a form of in-game currency within Fortnite. V-Bucks roughly exchange for 100 for $1, or 1,000 V-Bucks for $10.
Several legitimate esports organizations like Team SoloMid are running contests offering free V-Bucks, however, it is not as cut and dry as it seems. There are no redeemable codes for Fortnite. When a social media post or website is offering “free V-Bucks”, they are actually offering a gift card equivalent of the V-Bucks. The same goes for the season pass, there are no redeemable codes. It is incredibly misleading.
If you run across a website that offers free V-Bucks in a form of a code, be sure to report the website directly to Epic through their forums or their Twitter. One website I ran across offered V-Bucks for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC in 2,800, 8,500, or 13,500 increments. Once I selected the amount I desired, I was pushed to a page that asked for all of my Epic sign-in information. Essentially, it was a phishing scam. Do not fall for it.
Most posts or websites that offer anything for free are a scam. There are accounts that are legitimate, but the winner would be receiving a gift card or PayPal equivalent to the amount. This is worrisome for entrants or players under the age allowed for some of these offers. Epic has been cracking down on these fake sites and false social media postings, but it is almost like they are fighting the tide. All we can do is report the fake sites until Epic comes out with a code system, if ever.
