The Age of Empires 4 civilizations list was shrouded in mystery for a good few years, much like the strategy game itself, but after April’s Fan Preview event and E3 2021, we now have a better idea of who we can lead onto the battlefield.
The first extended look at gameplay revealed four of Age of Empires 4’s playable civilizations, while the development team shared some more details about its overall faction design philosophy and future plans.
Playable Civilizations in Age of Empires 4
AoE 4’s factions will feature a higher degree of asymmetry than those of past titles, which can be seen both in their unique units, various bonuses, and mechanics. The Mongols, for example, can pack up their entire base and move it around the map, while the Delhi Sultanate fields fearsome War Elephants.
A total of eight civilizations will be playable at release. Franchise Creative Director Adam Isgreen clarified that the number results from the asymmetrical elements that require a greater effort when balancing. The full roster won’t be limited to Europe and Asia and the team plans to “keep expanding” after launch.
To celebrate the game’s first anniversary, the Season 3 update brings two new playable civilizations to AoE 4, in the shape of the Ottomans and Malians.
Here is how the Age of Empires IV civilizations list looks at this moment in time:
- Abbasid Dynasty
- Chinese
- Delhi Sultanate
- England
- France
- Holy Roman Empire
- Mongols
- Rus
- Ottomans
- Malians
