Setting off on your quest to locate Emily’s uncle, Jeremy Hartwood, you will come across numerous foes wandering the corridors of Derceto’s asylum. To combat these threats, the developers have placed several weapons and defensive items about the place to help you deal with any combat encounters.
This page is designed to showcase the weapons available in the game through a detailed list, ensuring you’re aware of all your options and won’t overlook any during your playthrough. We will explain what weapons are most useful and explore their various uses.
Alone in the Dark Melee Weapons
In Alone in the Dark, players can find a variety of melee weapons throughout their journey, useful for combating the game’s less challenging monsters. While most of these weapons have limited durability and may break easily during combat, they can still prove effective at taking down weaker enemies, especially when ammunition is scarce.
Our experience with combat has revealed that these melee weapons typically only withstand the defeat of one monster before breaking. Despite encountering a number of different melee weapons, we’ve noticed minimal differences in their uses. You can even stun enemies using bricks, or throw Molotov cocktails with fire damage for the best results.
Here’s the full list of Melee weapons in the game, after which we will discuss the guns you can use.
Melee Weapon | Use |
---|---|
Hatchet | Standard Attack |
Sledgehammer | Standard Attack |
Shovel | Standard Attack |
Oar | Standard Attack |
Adze | Standard Attack |
Ice Pick | Standard Attack |
Bricks | Throw |
Molotov cocktails | Throw |
Alone in the Dark Guns List
In Alone in the Dark, players will find and equip three standard weapons: the Tommy Gun, the Shotgun, and the Pistol, the starting weapon for the game.
In easier modes of Alone in the Dark, reliance on these firearms is minimal throughout your playthrough, but as the difficulty increases, you might find yourself using the Tommy Gun and Shotgun more. This shift is largely due to the abundance of melee weapons available for use, coupled with the fact that monsters pose little challenge on easier settings.
Monsters in the game tend to demonstrate predictable behaviors, often simply charging at the player. It is only in the later stages of the game that players come across creatures like the Winged Sand Dweller and spider-like monsters capable of evading attacks.
Outside of these exceptions, effectively using the dodge button and striking with melee weapons usually puts you on the right track. This will change at higher difficulty levels, but the puzzles are the hardest part of the game, so we would recommend playing on medium or hard if you want more of a challenge in combat.
This is where the Tommy Gun and Shotgun will come in handy.
Here’s the list:
Weapon | Strength | Clip Size |
---|---|---|
Revolver | Standard use, perfect if you haven’t got any melee weapons and can handle most enemies in the game | 7 |
Shotgun | Excellent for close courters combat, in the halls of Derceto and on the ships you visit later in the game | 2 |
Tommy Gun | The best weapon in the game, it’s extremely effective for the Winged Sand Dweller and spider-like monsters you face toward the end of the game | 20 |
Flare Gun | Lights your path in the darkest hour | 1 |
The limited array of standard weapons in Alone in the Dark aligns with the original 1992 release. Recalling from memory, the game provided only a Revolver, Shotgun, and Bow. The Machine Gun was introduced in Alone in the Dark 2, but Edward and Emily could find a couple of swords in the classic version.
As a final note, it’s worth mentioning that in Alone in the Dark, both Emily Hartwood and Edward Carnby have access to the same weapons, facing similar monsters, puzzles, and challenges with little variation between their experiences. It’s mostly just the cut scenes.
