Marvel's Avengers is going to be the biggest game Crystal Dynamics has ever made, and they've already enlisted experts who previously worked on Uncharted, The Last of Us, and God of War, which makes this somewhat unassuming title an extremely interesting prospect.
Perhaps most interesting is the fact that Crystal Dynamics has got Vince Napoli as the Lead Combat Designer for Marvel's Avengers, who also developed the type of combat gameplay we had previously seen in God of War.
"We've had to go hire experts like Shaun Escayg, who is our creative director. He told stories for Uncharted and The Last of Us," said Crystal Dynamics studio head Scott Amos. "Dave Fifield was a game director who worked on Halo and Call of Duty, we needed him to help us with multiplayer. We go around and look at what we need. Who are the experts? Vince Napoli, he's our lead combat designer, he just did God of War, come help us with the combat."
According to Amos, the team is dedicated to making Avengers the very best game they've ever made, which is no small feat: "We cherry-picked the best of the best and said: 'Let's put this together in a new way for something bigger than we've ever done'."
With such a substantial roster of talent, it's no surprise Marvel themselves is also engaging heavily with the project, and Amos claims their insight and input is a massive boon, and "not just collaborators, they're partners."
To be more exact, Marvel's Bill Rosemann (Creative VP) said that CD can "put anything in the game, but focus on the story," which is exactly what they intend to do. With some of the best and brightest game dev talent around, things are certainly looking good for A-Day. Let us see if developers deliver.
