Barotrauma is what happens when you take the idea of a procedural multiplayer horror game and set it in the infinite oceans of Jupiter's moon Europa. This side-scrolling cooperative survival horror has you and up to 15 other players try to survive the onslaught of things better left unnamed.
Tasking players with macro and micro-managing a high-tech submarine as it ploughs through what may or may not be water, Barotrauma lends itself well both to pure horror, and to assorted multiplayer hijinks.
Barotrauma is going to let players choose between five different character classes, each of which is going to be tasked with handling a particular portion of the submarine. Submarine captain will, for example, have to coordinate his or her crew in an effort to survive Europa, while the medic is going to have to mend wounds left and right.
The ocean which the submarine explores is going to be procedurally generated for the most part, and filled to the brim with aggressive alien flora and fauna, various ruins, geological anomalies, and other secrets to discover.
Perhaps the most interesting feature of Barotrauma will be its focus on Steam Workshop implementation, where modders will have the chance to supply new characters, submarines, oceans, alien monsters, and virtually anything else they might come up with. Barotrauma will be making its way to Steam this Spring, so stay tuned for more.
