Publisher Electronic Arts and developer Dice have officially revealed Battlefield 2042 as the next entry in the popular first-person shooter series. As its name suggests, it trades the historical setting of the two most recent titles for a near-future setting that pits the US and Russia against each other.
Battlefield 2042 launches with 7 maps that support up to 128 players, pushing the envelope further than the traditional 64-player limit of past titles. Set in locations like South Korea, Qatar, or Egypt, players will have to adapt to various dynamic events like sandstorms or tornadoes rolling across the combat area.
Battlefield 2042 also has its own twist on the series’ classes through the introduction of Specialists. Weapon, vehicle, and character customization will be present but, more importantly, you can also summon a robotic dog to aid you in combat, and use a grappling hook or wingsuit for traversal purposes.
Conquest and Breakthrough are confirmed as returning, revamped modes, the former supporting up to 128 players on PC and current-gen consoles.
As far as Conquest goes, the action takes place in what the publisher calls “clusters” and will revolve around “sectors consisting of several flags instead of individual control points.” Hazard Zone and another new mode are two new modes that will be detailed at a later stage.
Three editions of Battlefield 2042 will be available – Standard, Gold, and Ultimate –, the latter providing early access to the game starting with October 15. An open beta is also confirmed to take place at some point, anyone who pre-orders the FPS getting access, regardless of platform.
The title will also seemingly feature the expected suite of live service elements, including a Year 1 Pass that includes four seasons, each with its own battle pass, cosmetic skins, and new Specialists.
Battlefield 2042 is slated to release on October 23 and headed to PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, and PS4.
