Netflix has firmly established itself as one of the leading streaming services and production companies around but, unlike its vast library of popular TV series, its presence in the video game space has been considerably less noticeable. That could, however, change, as a recent report suggests that a Bridgerton video game may be on the way.
In fact, it’s not just a Bridgerton video game that Netflix seems to have planned. The streaming giant wants to build on all its major franchises and expand them into other spaces beyond TV series or the books on which a part of them are based.
“Netflix is nascently exploring all this stuff and they understand that growing in areas that are non-competitive but additive on multiple levels – there’s revenue in marketing and creating shows/movies and events — is good for everybody,” one anonymous source told The Hollywood Reporter.
“They’re going to spend time and money figuring that out. And they want to do that in partnership with great creators who have an acute understanding of these worlds.”
Alongside the Bridgerton video game, a convention similar to this month’s WitcherCon is also seemingly planned.
While all of the above should be taken with a grain of salt, as it’s not official confirmation, this wouldn’t be Netflix’s first video game rodeo. Titles like Narcos: The Rise of the Cartels and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance clearly show that the company is at least aware that there’s value in the medium, despite not having given it its all until now.
Stranger Things also got a companion game for its third season alongside a series of crossover events with the likes of Dead by Daylight and, more recently, third-person free-to-play MOBA Smite.
Bridgerton is Netflix’s most-watched TV series, so it’s easy to understand why exposing gamers to it and giving existing fans a new way to experience its universe would be appealing for the streaming giant.
No details were shared on how the Regency-era period drama might be translated into video game form, but something tells me that it probably won’t be a bloody, fast-paced first-person shooter à la Doom Eternal (although wouldn’t that be awesome?).
