There's a confusing amount of media titled 'Call of Cthulhu', including - yes - video games themselves, but also books, stories, artwork, and more. The upcoming Call of Cthulhu video game, however, may just be the most high-profile one yet, and a fully-fledged Lovecraftian AAA release, no less.
Inspired by the classic pen-and-paper RPGs by Chaosium, this Call of Cthulhu will be a first-person investigative adventure, where the protagonist is (as usual) a PI looking into the disappearances and subsequent deaths of the members of the Hawkins family.
The latest gameplay trailer for this nightmarish experience features some details on the practical workings of Pierce's investigative process, with glimpses of exploration, dialogue, and crime scene recreation.
Whereas the dialogue system will work in much the same way as we're used to, the trailer shows it to be a more dynamic feature than one might expect, with vivid NPC reactions and shifts in mood and disposition happening in real-time. Recreating the crime scenes will, on the other hand, make use of Pierce's intuition to reconstruct what really went down in the past, which will in turn help Pierce during exploration and interaction sequences.
The trailer is included below for your viewing pleasure, so take a gander and see for yourself. Call of Cthulhu is set to release on PC come October 30th, and is currently available in playable form at Gamescom 2018. Stay tuned for more information coming out in the next couple of weeks.
