Reflecting back on the release of Cyberpunk 2077, Michał Platkow-Gilewski, VP of PR and communication at CD Projekt has claimed that upon launch, the hype around Cyberpunk 2077 was no longer a fairytale.
Squeezed with pressure and high expectations, CD Projekt wasn’t able to deliver the Cyberpunk fans expected. Many hailed it as the biggest disappointment of the year, as it was still plagued with bugs and mishaps even after multiple delays. It wasn’t long before refunds were offered and Sony removed the game from the PlayStation Store.
Michał Platkow-Gilewski expresses disagreement with how fans received Cyberpunk 2077
After deep acknowledgment and a plan to make situations better at CD Projekt while reshaping their relationship with the public, Platkow-Gilewski concludes with how he believes the game deserved better judgment.
“I actually believe Cyberpunk on launch was way better than it was received, and even the first reviews were positive,” he tells Gameindustry.biz. “Then it became a cool thing not to like it. We went from hero to zero really fast. That was the tough moment.
“We didn’t know what was happening. We knew that the game is great, yes we can improve it, yes we need to take time to do it, and we need to rebuild some stuff.”
CD Projekt had a lot of work to do but through all of the mayhem, Platkow-Gilewski and the team decided to stay positive.
“That took us a lot of time, but I don’t believe we were ever broken. We were always like: Let’s do this.”
CD Projekt is working on a detailed expansion, Phantom Liberty, featuring Idris Elba which is set to release on September 26, 2023. Patch 1.7 will release alongside it.
Cyberpunk’s expansion hopes to help rekindle the relationship between CD Projekt and the players.
“After the release it was tough, but I knew that we had the same people. The gamers are the same… we just need to fix our relationship. The only thing we can truly do is just deliver what we are capable of. I have a feeling that soon we will be able to do that and hopefully that will be a new beginning for everyone.”
