Vietnam was announced today as the newest playable faction for Civilization 6 players who own the New Frontier Pass, coming alongside its January 2021 update. Mongolia and China are also getting another leader option in the shape of Kublai Khan, while the Monopolies and Corporations game mode emphasize the power of duplicate resources.
Vietnam is the is described as a “culture and terrain-focused civ” led by a “fierce warrior” who’s “known for their bravery, guerilla tactics and deadly temper.” As with every new faction, its leader will be showcased in a separate video, but the developers did mention that they’re seen as one of Vietnam’s national heroes and “godlike figure whose personality and achievements have become the stuff of legends.”
Details about Civilization VI’s newest alternate leader, Kublai Khan, are also scarce at the moment, but we do know that, once the January 2021 update goes live, he will bring the energy of a “jolly but ruthless leader” to the 4X strategy game’s roster of historical figures. Naturally, as with all alternate leaders, he will offer new avenues for playing both as China and Mongolia.
Civ Vi’s Vietnam & Kublai Khan Pack also introduces a new district, the Preserve. It can only be built on tiles found away from infrastructure. Preserves increase housing based on Appeal, can culture bomb adjacent tiles and increase the Appeal of adjacent tiles. You can then construct one of two buildings in them: The Grove – unlocked using Mysticism – and the Sanctuary that’s unlocked with Conservation.
New Frontier Pass owners are also set to receive the Monopolies and Corporations game mode as part of Civ VI’s January 2021 update. Aiming to fulfill requests for “more robust economic gameplay”, the mode lets you create industries around duplicate resources. They provide buffs to their home cities – like increasing yield or decreasing production costs – alongside a steady supply of Great Merchant points.
Industries can then be leveled up to become Corporations which grant increased buffs and enable you to create products. Stock Exchanges and Seaports come with slots that allow you to store products in distant cities, sharing industry bonuses across your civilization.
Finally, Corporations can be upgraded to Monopolies, but only if you “dominate the global supply of a luxury resource.” These increase the gold generated each turn, based on how much of the market you’ve secured for yourself and how many other factions you’re trading with. They also grant a large amount of Tourism.
Civilization 6’s Vietnam & Kublai Khan Pack goes live on January 28 alongside the strategy game’s January 2021 Update.
