Dead Cells is one of the indie gems of last year that has been continuously receiving content updates and DLC since its release.
By the looks of it, the Dead Cells DLC isn’t going anywhere for the foreseeable future. Not only that, but a sequel could also be a possibility further down the line.
Dead Cells DLC
“The first problem is the money. As long as it’s profitable, Dead Cell is paying for the Motion Twin core team and our team, Evil Empire, who are working on Dead Cells and that’s a lot of money per year. We need to make a certain amount, so if we don’t make any more money then we’d have to stop. You also don’t want to work on the game for so long that you ruin it. Sometimes you have to know when to stop. From an artistic perspective, there’s a limit to what we can do. I would say at least two more years of content for the base game.”, Evil Empire’s Steve Filby told outlet OnlySP.
“Maybe we’ll make Dead Cells 2 or a multiplayer version of the game. Maybe we’ll do a Dead Cells version of Hollow Knight, a proper Metroidvania game. We have a lot of stupid ideas we could do.”, he continued. Having released free DLC until now, Evil Empire is considering paid DLC for the future. That being said, it wants to make sure that it’s done “in a way that the community feels good about and is happy with”.
The upcoming year of Dead Cells DLC will tackle a number of different aspects. The game’s mutation system will see some change and players will receive new weapons to try out. Another area of focus will be re-balancing the economy alongside introducing shorter runs.
Evil Empire is the team lead by ex-head of studio of Motion Twin Steve Filby, and currently dedicated to developing Dead Cells content. It is made up of former Motion Twin developers, alongside a couple of new faces. In the meantime, developer Motion Twin is prototyping its next title.
