Publisher Slitherine’s Home of Wargamers 2021 Live+ event goes live later today, treating strategy fans to a set of gameplay reveals, new details, and discussions about its upcoming games. 4X strategy title Distant Worlds 2 will have a segment dedicated to it, during which we can get a better look at some of its main features, alongside pirates and independent worlds.
Erik Rutins, Matrix Games CEO and one of the main creators of Distant Worlds 2, will walk viewers through a gameplay session that hasn’t been shared before, delving into the different ways in which you can deal with pirates, including a handful of skirmishes against them, why independent worlds matter despite being weaker than your empire, and more.
Distant Worlds 2’s pirates aren’t a cohesive force, being organized into small factions that compete against each other. “They represent a challenge in the early game, as they are a threat that teaches players how to protect their economy and engage in a bit of pro-active combat and diplomacy,” the publisher said in an emailed press release.
Players can either opt to answer violently or work alongside the pirates, each approach having its own rewards. The former gets rid of them, ensuring you have one less threat the universe needs to worry about, while the latter can get you some valuable information. Ignore the pirates and you may have both your economy and expansion plans foiled.
Independent worlds in Distant Worlds 2 are “weaker than the player’s empire and mainly interested in trade.” Aside from being a great source of additional resources, you can also aim for persuading them to join your empire, or even force them into submission for a population boost early on.
In the video, players will also get “a brief glimpse of some of the remnants of the ancient civilizations of the galaxy as well as a mysterious terror of space, the Gravillex.” Ship, base, and starfighter customization will also be showcased, alongside the title’s deep research tree.
