Respawn is publishing a Star Wars strategy game for EA, developed by the emerging talent at Bit Reactor. According to job postings, the game will take advantage of the capabilities of Unreal Engine 5.
Bit Reactor is actively seeking new talent, as indicated on its official website, with open positions for a Senior Lighting Artist, Lead Level Designer, and Lead Producer. The details within these listings offer insights into the ambitions for the upcoming Star Wars strategy game.
Will it be like Empire At War or Galactic Battlegrounds
These job postings reveal more about the game than any official announcements to date, providing us with several key insights taken from the descriptions that hint at what’s planned for its development.
There’s three key things that we’ve learned from looking through the job listings:
- The Star Wars strategy game will be using Unreal Engine 5
- Experience working on console titles is a must, so we assume it will come to Xbox Series X / PlayStation 5 as well as PC
- The game will aim to revolutionise strategy games through the lens of the Star Wars universe
“Developing with Unreal Engine 5, we are going to tell amazing Star Wars stories that will be supported by amazing visuals.” read the job listing for the Senior VFX Artist.
Bit Reactor’s team has more experience in the 4X and turn-based strategy genres, featuring veterans from the development teams of XCOM and Civilization. As such, this project may more closely resemble those titles rather than EA’s earlier Star Wars real-time strategy games, such as Empire at War and Galactic Battlegrounds.
The project was originally revealed in early 2022, but since then, details have been sparse. Speculation about its cancellation arose following recent layoffs at EA. However, Bit Reactor quickly addressed these concerns via social media, assuring that the team was continuing its work on the project.
“Last week was difficult for the industry, and more so because of our strong relationships with the other teams at Respawn.” reads a tweet from the developer.
“But for those asking, we are still hard at work, and our game was unaffected by last week’s news.”
“We are excited to continue working with the superbly talented developers at Respawn,” said Douglas Reilly, VP, Lucasfilm Games when the title was originally announced back in 2022.
“They have demonstrated excellence in telling epic Star Wars stories along with best-in-class gameplay across different genres and we are looking forward to bringing more amazing experiences to the galaxy far, far away.”
We look forward to learning more about this project as soon as Bit Reactor is ready to reveal the first gameplay footage. We will keep you posted.
